Fourth Grade Animal Identity Masks!

Fourth grade animal masks are coming along nicely!  First, fourth grade learned all different reasons why masks are worn.  We talked about Native Africans, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and why we wear masks.  Next, we learned about identity and how artists use this as a theme in their artwork.  We looked at several examples of animal masks and used similes and metaphors to describe the person wearing the masks identity.  Then it was our turn!  We chose an animal we thought would say something about our own identity.
Fourth grade next learned how to make 2D shapes into 3D forms.  We built our masks up from a base with tag board and masking tape.  Next, we covered our masks in a layer of plaster gauze.  Today we painted the mask our base color, and next week we will finish all the details!
