Third grade is studying the architecture and public art of Chicago. For our sketchbook assignment, students cut out photographs and drawings of familiar Chicago buildings and sculptures. They then arranged them into a mock cityscape. Once the buildings were glued down, students learned about juxtaposition in post-modern art. We looked at several examples of things put together - that didn't really go together.
Students added unusual, silly, or scary details to their cityscapes.
I uploaded several awesome examples of this project on our website on Artsonia.com.
