First grade began the year discussing the interior and exterior of homes. We looked at Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, pictures of castles, and paintings of homes. We drew a small sketch of the exterior of a home on our first day.
Next, first grade designed their own home exterior with the help of their classmates. Each table got a box. Each student could design one side of the box, or the table could work together to make one house. We started with windows and doors. What color were they? Where should they be placed? We added trims and frames, landscaping, and mailboxes. Lastly, first grade used crayons and markers to add any other detail they felt their home needed.
