Day of the Dead in fifth grade. Tin Ornaments.

All the classes at Grant-White learned a lot during Hispanic Heritage Month.  Each day Ms. Suarez would tell us about a remarkable Hispanic over the intercom and teach us the Spanish word of the day.  In Art Class we integrated these studies and made some beautiful Day of the Dead Art.

Fifth grade made some fantastic bas-relief tin ornaments.  We looked at tin ornament folk art made in Mexico and learned how the Mexicans use these ornaments in their celebration of Day of the Dead.  We drew our own festive skeleton and transferred it to our light gauge metal.  We made it appear sculptural and added pattern, designs, and color.  Fifth grade liked working with this new media!
