Fifth grade cracked me up during their centers time. They totally camped out on the floor making wild sculptures out of recyclables.
Second Grade Centers Time!
It's been awhile since this second grade class had some time for Art Centers!

Second grade meets Henri Matisse.
Second grade learned about the artist Henri Matisse and his beautiful Cut-Outs. We talked about his bold use of color and his abstract compositions. Second grade set out to make their own Matisse inspired collage.
Fifth grade is painting like real artists!
Fifth grade has been learning all sorts of new color theory vocabulary. Our final project in this unit is an acrylic painting after the artist Georgia O'Keeffe.
Fifth grade learned all about mixing analogous colors to create depth, and how to paint with acrylics. It was fun using the mini-easels! And the paintings look great!

Fifth Grade Planet Paintings
Fifth grade learned about mixing primary colors and creating tints and shades. We also learned how a light source might change a colors brightness.
Fourth grade makes African Masks!
We have been listening to A Long Walk to Water in art class. It is about a Sudanese "lost boy" and how he managed to get to America. It is a good book and has kept the classes attention for many weeks! The book happens to coincide with our latest project, African Masks!
Fourth graders are not using the same traditional techniques as native Africans. However, we are learning a lot about shapes to forms, colors from nature, balance, and repetition. We talked about the importance of the masks in African culture, and how many of the masks are held sacred.

Kindergarten Paints like Mondrian
Kindergartners learned about the artist Piet Mondrian. We talked about his black lines and primary colored shapes and boxes he created in his paintings.
Next, we made our own shapes using black masking tape on tagboard. Then, we used the primary colors to paint! It was fun mixing all of the colors!

Kindergarten's class portrait!
Kindergarten made some super cute self-portraits. This project took us many many weeks to complete because it had so many parts to it!
We started with a rainbow background. We learned all about Roy G. Biv and the color spectrum.

Next we very carefully drew a self-portrait and name tag. Then we put it all together!
The art room needs baby wipes!
Could you please donate a package of baby wipes or Wet Ones to the art room? We use wipes constantly to clean hands and tables and our supply is dangerously low! Thanks!
Kindergarten Birdies
Kindergarten made these cute little birdies. We colored a pattern, cut, assembled and glued all on our own.

Fifth Grade Centers time! They love the sculpture center!
The kids in Mrs. Malarski's class have been earning a lot of stars this year for their awesome behavior in art class. We finally got to have some centers time, and I just loooooooved the great sculptures they made with all the recyclables! Great job fifth grade!
Day of the Dead in Third Grade
All the classes at Grant-White learned a lot during Hispanic Heritage Month. Each day Ms. Suarez would tell us about a remarkable Hispanic over the intercom and teach us the Spanish word of the day. In Art Class we integrated these studies and made some beautiful Day of the Dead Art.
Third grade made these cool Calavera prints. We looked at other relief prints that were Day of the Dead themed. We drew our sugar skulls and added a ton of pattern and symmetrical designs. We transferred our drawings onto a foam printing plate, applied ink, and printed!

Happy Fall! Second Grade Still Life Paintings.
Second graders learned a lot about the genre of still life. We studied a lot of different still life paintings. We talked about the size of the objects in the still life and how a lot of times these objects overlap. Some things were big, some things are small, some things we only see a small part of.
Next, we learned how to draw things that we see on a table in fall. We practiced pumpkins, squash, leaves, acorns, dried corn, fruit bowls, and more!
Then, we put these objects together to create our own still life picture.
Once our drawings were perfect, we got to PAINT! We used tempera paint. We only used the PRIMARY colors. Second graders knew that if they had the primary colors, they could make every other color on the color wheel. It was a lot of work, but second graders mixed and painted and mixed and painted.... Kindergarten traveled in time to learn about Cave Painters!
Each class takes a different part of the Art History timeline and learns and creates a work of art inspired by that time period. Kindergartners start at the very beginning - The Cave Painters! We watched a short video about a little girl who visits the cave paintings in Lascaux, and make our own piece of cave out of crumpled construction paper.
